Tentacle monsters in Everspace

I just recently picked up Everpsace again, and I have started noticing a lot of things I didn’t before, like these tentacle monsters that are placed randomly on structures. I know one of the NPC’s has you go hunting for alien lifeforms, but so far he hasn’t asked me about this one, so I’m not sure if it is just “background noise” or not.
